Looking forward to Spring Graduation

About 1,000 people celebrated their graduation from Extended Education programs last year. Will this be your year to celebrate? Extended Education is preparing for our 2020 Spring Graduation, a formal cap and gown affair to remember, aligned with the University of Manitoba’s convocation and to be livestreamed. If you are to graduate, it’s time to mark your calendar and plan to join us on June 9.

Apply to graduate

Certificate program students need to declare their intent to graduate online through Aurora. Log in to Aurora, select “Enrolment and Academic Records,” select “Declarations,” and follow the instructions.  If your desired graduation term is not listed on your Aurora account or you have missed the deadline, contact Student and Instructor Services as soon as possible at:

The deadline for declaring your intention to graduate for the Spring Graduation is January 20, 2020. 

Cap & Gown Reservations

Academic attire consisting of a cap (mortarboard) and gown is required for all graduates who wish to participate in the 2020 Extended Education Graduation. Reserve your cap & gown through Gaspard, the supplier of University of Manitoba academic regalia.

Deadline is TBA.

Certificate Program Academic Attire Rental Fees: $26 plus tax.
(Fee includes a gown, cap & tassel.)

When you arrive

Arrive by 6:00 pm
Report to the James Daley Field House in Max Bell Centre by 6 pm. Bring photo ID and your student card. To avoid congestion, family and friends should use the designated entrances to IGAC, with wheelchair access. They should not accompany you to the James Daley Field House in Max Bell Centre.

Get your procession card
Line up to pick up your procession card.
If you feel it will help the presenter to pronounce your name, fill in the phonetic pronunciation space on your card or meet with the Orator in the James Daley Field House in Max Bell Centre when you check in.

Cap & Gown
Pick up your academic attire in the James Daley Field House in Max Bell Centre.

Join your group
After you are dressed in your academic attire, proceed to the area for the numerical organization of your group. Please remain in your assigned position for the rest of your time in the James Daley Field House in Max Bell Centre and for the procession into IGAC.

Professional Photography

Professional Photography will be offered at grad during the ceremony and on a first-come first-serve basis. See last year’s photography options.

Celebration of Graduate on stage

We very much encourage you to celebrate your graduate when they cross the stage to receive their parchment.  Please be respectful of when, another graduate will be receiving his/her parchment, as their family and friends would like to hear their name and also be able to show their celebration.  We ask that you please keep your time to a minimum.

What to wear

Dress clothes are appropriate.

Wear light-weight clothing under your gown. IGAC can be quite warm.
Wear comfortable shoes for the ceremony. You will be standing for extended periods.
Bring hair pins to help hold your cap securely in place, if this is a concern.

Parking

Free Parking options

U Lot Parking

Parking is available in U Lot, off Chancellor Matheson Road. Guests who park in U Lot can enter IGAC via the Max Bell complex.

Q Lot Parking

Parking is available in Q Lot, on Dysart Road across from St. Paul’s College

Handicapped parking is available in P Lot

Handicapped parking is available at Max Bell Centre on Sidney Smith Street. University Security Services staff will be on hand to direct drivers to the handicapped area.

Student Accessibility Services

If you require help with seating, sign language interpretation or other issues, contact Student Accessibility Services two weeks before your graduation ceremony. 

There are mobility-friendly seating areas on the main floor of IGAC. There is one wheelchair available to take guests from the front of IGAC to the accessible seating area, however the wheelchair is not available for use during the ceremony or reception. 

Any guests with accessibility or mobility challenges should approach an usher in a blue gown for assistance with seating. The ushers will be stationed at the front reception area of IGAC and room for one support person to be seated with you.

Accessible parking will be available in P Lot on Sidney Smith Street.

Event details

2020 Extended Education Graduation – Spring will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at Investors Group Athletic Centre (IGAC).

Your graduate is to RSVP the number of guests who will be accompanying them, but no tickets are required.

IGAC doors at 6:00 p.m. (open one hour prior to the ceremony), and guests should be seated at least 15 minutes prior to the start.

For family and friends who are unable to attend the ceremony, a live webcast of the convocation ceremony will be broadcast at umanitoba.ca/convocation/live

Seating

Guest seating is in the bleachers, accessed from the third floor. Please exercise extreme caution when going up or down the bleacher stairs.

Accessible seating
For guests who are disabled or in wheelchairs, mobility-friendly seating areas are located on the main floor of IGAC. There is space for one support person to be seated with you.

A wheelchair is available to assist guests from the front of IGAC to the accessible seating area, but this wheelchair is not for use throughout the ceremony or reception.

Children
Children are welcome to attend the ceremony. However, please keep in mind it will last two to two and a half hours. Also, due to fire regulations, baby strollers cannot be accommodated in the aisles of IGAC. Please be advised you will need to hold your baby or toddler during the ceremony.

Length of ceremony

Expect the ceremony to last two hours. Graduation ceremony length can vary due to the number of graduates, speeches, and awards.

After the ceremony

After the ceremony, graduates proceed out of IGAC to the reception area located in the Max Bell Fieldhouse. This is an excellent location to meet your graduates. Do not meet them at the exit doors of IGAC as this area must be kept clear.

Photography

Taking photos
Guests may only take photos from their seats. Guests are not permitted on the floor during the ceremony, due to fire regulations.

Professional photos
Professional photos will be taken during the ceremony. These can be ordered at the time the graduate orders their gown rental.

Directions

Location
Graduation is held in the Investors Group Athletic Centre (IGAC). On the day of graduation, there will be signage from the parking areas directing you to IGAC.

Designated entrances
Family and friends should use the designated entrances to IGAC. Entrances are wheelchair-accessible. To avoid congestion, please do not accompany graduates to their assembly area.

Flowers, Souvenirs & Photo Frames

U Floria florists will have tables set up in the mezzanine outside the guest seating area in the Investors Group Athletic Centre prior to the ceremonies for guests to purchase flowers for their favourite graduate. Visit their website ufloria.ca to view their work.

Graduation Frames

You’ve worked hard to earn your certificate, now display it with pride! Certificate frames are a great way to display your accomplishments. Frames feature the University of Manitoba crest or logo, are manufactured in Canada, and help to support important alumni programming.

They will be available for purchase online at umanitoba.ca/alumni or throughout the year at either Fort Garry or Bannatyne Campus BookStores.

Memorabilia of your days with the University of Manitoba
