This two-streamed program, teaching and design, is for both new and more experienced educators and professional trainers who want to gain foundational knowledge and techniques in instructional design, e-learning technologies, teaching in an online environment, and the coordination of e-learning projects.

Who is the Program for?

The program is suited for you if you are a new or emerging teacher; educator, government or corporate trainer; or instructional designer.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the program, students must have an undergraduate degree. Students must also meet English Language Proficiency Requirements for admission to the University of Manitoba.

Program Objectives

As an LOA E-Learning graduate, you will have developed the unique skill set needed for teaching or designing the online learning experience.If you choose the Teaching Stream, you will:

  • Understand best teaching practices in an online environment
  • Use pedagogy and course outcomes as a guide for selecting learning technology
  • Identify measurable learning outcomes
  • Apply knowledge, strategies and tools to develop a detailed online teaching project

If you choose the instructional Design stream, you will:

  • Understand basic learning theories and their relation to instructional design
  • Use pedagogy and course outcomes as a guide for selecting learning technology
  • Write measurable learning outcomes
  • Apply knowledge, strategies and tools to develop a detailed online instructional design project

Program Length

The program will take a minimum of twelve months to complete. There is no maximum time limit for completion of the LOA.

Program Structure

Each stream involves three 36-hour courses for a total of 108 hours. Students are required to take all three of the required courses in their chosen stream and the Capstone course must be taken last.

$100 program application fee and $595 per course

What is a Letter of Accomplishment (LOA)?

The Letter of Accomplishment credential indicates that you have successfully completed an intensive, focused program that addresses the educational requirements for a very precise field of study.

What is Online Learning?

Online learning is how we offer the course content. The where and when is completely up to you. You’re free to decide the way that you’d like to integrate the classroom into your life, whether you’d like to do the course work on lunch breaks, in bed, or on a picnic table on a leisurely Saturday afternoon. Simply download the course modules, and learn at your own pace. Remember, instructors are still available to help when you need it. Online courses are delivered through U of M’s online learning management system UM Learn.

What is the Capstone project?

The Capstone project is an assignment designed specifically to apply and showcase the skills you learned in the other courses in the program.

Can I enroll in individual courses if I’m not interested in the entire program?

Can I enroll in individual courses if I’m not interested in the entire program? Yes, you can enroll in individual courses. Completed courses can later be applied towards a Letter of Accomplishment in E-Learning.
